Pattilou (Kirk) Judge

Pattilou Judge (nee Kirk) died on Wednesday, November 25, aged 81. She was born in Barton, Maryland and moved with her family to Akron in 1940. She graduated from Garfield High School in 1952, and received her BA and MA in Education from the University of Akron. She taught elementary and special education students in the Akron Public School system for over 20 years, and worked as an Educational Specialist for the State of Ohio's Special Education Regional Resource Center until her retirement in 1995.

Pattilou was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, and was an outspoken advocate for children with special needs. She received the Summit County Historical Society Woman of the Year Award for Courage in 1992. "If you have a handicap and you can get past fear, you can do pretty much what everybody else does. You just do it in a different way," she said.

After retirement, Pattilou was an active volunteer for many organizations including the Cuyahoga Falls General Hospital Community Board, the Cuyahoga Valley National Park, the Akron Aeros, and the Akron Blind Center. She was a longtime member of the Akron Story League, and a member of Firestone Park Presbyterian Church for over 75 years where she served many terms as a Deacon and Elder.

She met her beloved husband in the University of Akron marching band. They celebrated their 60th anniversary in August. She enjoyed listening to all kinds of music, learning and teaching handicrafts, and watching Cleveland Indians Baseball.

Pattliou was preceded in death by her parents, James F. and Evelyn (Meese) Kirk of Akron; brother, James D. Kirk of Brimfield. She is survived by her husband, Kenneth; children, Laura A. Judge of Baltimore, MD, Kenneth C. "Chris" (Iris) Judge of Mountain Home, NC, Susan E. Judge of Boise, ID and James "Jay" Judge of Akron; grandchildren, Geoffrey R. Hill and James R. Veenstra.

Friends may call from 2-5 p.m. Sunday, November 29, 2015 at the Schlup Pucak Funeral Home, 788 Kenmore Blvd, Akron. Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Monday at Firestone Park
Presbyterian Church, 275 S. Firestone Blvd, Akron with Rev Sue Curtis officiating. Burial to follow at Northlawn Memorial Gardens.
