Michael C. de Poincy, born on April 10, 1956, in New Orleans, Louisiana, passed away on April 13, 2026, at the age of 70. Michael faced many challenges in life, being mentally challenged, deaf in both ears, and having a speech impediment. Despite these obstacles, he showed remarkable resilience and independence throughout his life.
At age four, Michael moved with his family to Memphis, Tennessee, where he later attended public school in special education classes. His school years saw him return to New Orleans and later move to San Antonio, Texas. During this time, Michael learned essential life skills such as cooking, cleaning, and washing clothes, preparing him for a life of self-sufficiency. He worked diligently in both mainstream lower-level jobs and specialized workshops, always striving to contribute and grow. Despite these challenges Mike remained a beloved and cheerful presence in the lives of those who knew him.
After the passing of his parents in the late 1990s, Michael relocated to Murphysboro, Illinois, with his brother where he worked at the S.T.A.R.T. workshop and lived independently. Everyone loved Mike and he was very sociable in the area. In 2014, he moved to Akron, Ohio, and joined Windfall Industries, a workshop where he did piece work and found a supportive community. Michael lived in a group home for mentally challenged adults managed by Summit DD, Sevita Health and later supported by REM Ohio where he most recently resided in a group home in Barberton, Ohio. He took great pride in his work at Windfall and cherished the friendships he made with them and others in the Cleveland/Akron area.
Michael was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his brother, his brother's wife, and three nephews. His life was a testament to perseverance, kindness, and the strength of the human spirit. Michael passed away from Acute Respiratory Failure following back surgery.
He will be deeply missed by his family and all who knew him. May his memory be a blessing.
A Memorial Service will be held 2 p.m. Sunday April 26, 2026 at the Schlup-Pucak & Wilson Funeral Home, 788 Kenmore Blvd, Akron. Friends may call one hour prior to services.
