“Down in the mountains”. So would begin the stories of Ruby Geraldine Greig who left this world on June 7, 2016, to be with her husband of 72 years, David; and her beautiful daughter, Sandra, in a heavenly eternal life. The stories were of her childhood and adventures traveling across the mountains with her father. These were her fondest memories over the last few months of her life. She was born October 16, 1924, in the southeastern mountains of Kentucky. She was the third eldest of eleven children, and as “the big sister” helped nurture many of her younger brothers and sisters. This began her loving and caring spirit to help others.
Ruby left home at 17 years old for Niagara Falls to support the war effort. There she met and was romanced by David. They relocated to Ohio to marry and begin their family, son Paul David, and daughter Sandra Lucille. Ruby and David’s home became a refuge for their siblings as they left their coal mining roots to seek a better life, and many other family members during their individual times of need. Their home was always the gathering place for family, friends, and neighbors. The coffee was always hot, there was always food on the table, and laughter in the air because Ruby loved and made everyone welcome.
Ruby’s legacy is her large loving family, which includes 5 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews that loved her like a second mother. Remembering her 91 years will include, son Paul (Barb), son-in-law Steve Yakabisin, and nephew Walter Matney (Dorothy). The grandchildren and great grandchildren that will cherish her memory include Shannon DeDomenic (Mark), Gehrig, Jacob, and Caeden; Kristy Easterling (Dana), Zoe and Ella; Jamie Czetwertynski (Paul), Hannah, Kathryn, Claire, and Andrew; Erica Walulik (Matt) Saige and Cassidy; Amy Kimble (Tom) Brandon and Ava.
Funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, June 10, 2016, at Park United Methodist Church, 2308 24th St S W, Akron, Oho 44314, with Rev. Linda Somerville officiating. Calling hours will be held two hours prior to the service. Burial will follow the memorial service at Greenlawn Memorial Park. Memorial gifts, in lieu of flowers, may be made to Park United Methodist Church or any charity meaningful to your remembrance of Ruby.
